Good leaders listen first and speak second

A man works as a machine operator in a textile factory. The company has a recurring problem with the quality of its thread, with yarn breakage and machine stoppages. The man has worked there for years and has developed a way to reduce the problems, but it’s only when a new CEO arrives and takes time to listen to her new employees, that the idea is discovered. ‘What a wonderful and simple idea,’ says the CEO.

‘How long have you known about this?’ ‘Thirty-two years,’ answers the man.

Do people in your organisation feel listened to and understood?

What might you be missing by not listening to them?

And how much more valued might they feel?
